Marisa Schwab, M.D. is a general surgery resident at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Schwab is interested in a career in pediatric and fetal surgery and spent her research years working in Dr. Tippi MacKenzie's lab, investigating fetal molecular therapies for various genetic diseases.

Originally from Switzerland, Dr. Schwab completed her undergraduate education at Occidental College, graduating magna cum laude with a degree in Biology and a minor in History. She received her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine. Dr. Schwab has published numerous peer-reviewed papers in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery, the American Journal of Surgery, the Journal of Surgical Research, among others. She has also authored chapters in multiple textbooks, including Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology, Fetal and Neonatal Surgery, and Queenan's Management of High-Risk Pregnancy. During her dedicated research time in Dr. MacKenzie's lab, Dr. Schwab performed fetal surgery in various animal models, including delivering in utero gene therapy in a sheep model for spinal muscular atrophy. In addition, she led regulatory efforts to successfully open a phase I clinical trial for in utero enzyme replacement therapy in fetuses with certain lysosomal storage diseases (NCT04532047).
