Healing Others, Empowering Ourselves
The Muriel Steele Society (MSS) was established in honor of Muriel Steele, MD. Throughout her career, Dr. Steele overcame enormous obstacles on the road to becoming a phenomenal surgeon.
MSS is an inclusive community dedicated to inspiring, supporting, and promoting surgeons so they can thrive at all stages of their careers. We are comprised of committees spanning numerous areas, working together seamlessly to promote wellness of members and provide mentorship across all levels of training from medical student to junior faculty. MSS organizes events to foster a strong community to achieve the goal of continuing excellence in UCSF Surgery.

Muriel Steele Society Spotlight Series
MSS Spotlights started from an initiative by the Medical Student Committee (MSC) to serve as an opportunity for medical students to meet, interview and highlight surgery faculty at UCSF.
Featured Spotlights:

The Muriel Steele Society and the UCSF Department of Surgery are committed to protecting the health and well-being of faculty and learners. In these efforts, they have developed UCSF’s "Parenting in Surgery" initiative in collaboration with the Office of Graduate Medical Education and UCSF Lactation Accommodation Program. The goals of this initiative are to create a culture of understanding, share best practices across disciplines and institutions, provide support and mentorship to new parents, and develop innovative strategies to advocate for parent surgeons.
